C7 is a boutique hotel and brewery located in downtown Toronto at the intersection of Dundas Street West and Denison Avenue. The site was formerly host to a car mechanic garage and two story structure used by a small business.

The five story structure houses two core programmatic spaces, the main hotel is connected to a micro-brewery and tasting bar. The hotel offers both short-term and long-term living options as well as a hotel kitchen for guests to dine in. In the retail section, the micro-brewery allows guests a chance to view the brewing process and taste product.

The structure is clad in a custom perforated black zinc screen. Functioning as the exterior facade of the structure, the screen’s pattern is based on an abstraction of the graf ti that covered the existing buildings formerly on the site. This pattern is generated through an algorithmic process, where an input image is abstracted based on its luminance values and output as a pixelated pattern.

Each space in the C7 interacts with the exterior screen in various different architectural moments. When placed against the glazing it creates intricate shadows that are thrown into the space. In some moments, it is offset from the structure to create inhabitable space between the screen which offer a different spatial experience.

Along the Denison Avenue edge of the site the screen is used as a smaller structure that provides shelter front he elements for the patio and bus stop. While also marking an entrance to the site giving access to the outdoor retail space and hotel’s central parkette space.
